DTI supports Company Direction Programme at IBS
The Department of Trade & Industry (DTI) has announced that it will be supporting the 2010 intake for the Institute of Directors’ (IoD) Company Direction programme. DTI provides a subsidy to participants of 50% of the cost of the programme, which is provided by Salford University at the International Business School in Douglas. The programme has run on the Island for a number of years and is considered a benchmark qualification for those people with the roles and responsibilities of a Company Director.
Covering seven specific training modules, the combined Certificate/Diploma course provides participants with a detailed knowledge and understanding of the role of the Director and the Board. Delivered as intensive short courses, the programme is designed with maximum flexibility for busy people in mind. Delegates who successfully complete both the Certificate and Diploma courses, and who have the necessary practical experience, will be eligible to apply for the prestigious and valued Chartered Director status.
The DTI’s investment in local managers at all levels over the past three years has helped many hundreds of Isle of Man workers gain internationally recognised management qualifications at team leader, manager and director levels. The IoD programme is the pinnacle of such qualifications and is aimed at both current and aspiring leaders working within the Isle of Man business community.
Hon David Cretney MHK, Minister for the Department of Trade & Industry commented:
“In the last few years, training in management and supervisory skills has been in huge demand from local employers. My Department has worked with training providers to address this need by offering a three-tier approach providing training opportunities for supervisors/first line managers, middle to senior managers, and for senior executives and company directors. The support for IoD courses responds to demands for increased skill levels in this latter group. Our strong links with Salford University and the International Business School have enabled us to make training of this calibre available locally, allowing our senior business leaders to benefit from this comprehensive, internationally recognised training.”

Programme Benefits
Here are a few of the reasons given by past delegates for the IoD Company Direction Programme being so different from other management courses:
• It is designed specifically and exclusively for company directors and is continuously updated to meet their changing needs.
• It focuses on important boardroom issues throughout, covering legal, strategic, financial and many other aspects of board level activity.
• It is run by experienced professionals all used to operating at board level and with a wealth of knowledge in their field.
• It draws together directors with a wide range of experience to discover the real issues of company direction whilst taking a step back from the day to day running of their own company.
• It offers the flexibility most directors need, with short stand-alone course modules making up the total programme.
• It can lead to valuable qualifications, with an examination pass securing both the well-respected IoD Diploma, and eligibility to attain Chartered Director status.
